Cairngorms is a beautiful mountain reserve located at an altitude of about 1300 meters above sea level. It is located on the plateau of the same name in Scotland. This reserve was a favorite vacation spot for Walter Scott. At the moment, Cairngorms is one of the few almost untouched pieces of nature.
A large number of flora and fauna studies took place here, thanks to which several new species were found.
Entomologists have found a black fly (Ectaetia christii) here. According to scientists, it has been in the bark of a fallen tree for several thousand years, most likely since the Ice Age. Not far from here, a mushroom gnat (Creagdhubhia mallochorum) was found, which, according to scientists, did not feed on human blood, but lived off dead tree fungi. By the way, a new species of lichen (Rimularia globulosa) was discovered here, as well as some plants and insects that had not been seen in the UK before.
Such discoveries are valuable because the British fauna was thoroughly studied many years ago. This is why national parks like Cairngorms are receiving so much attention from the British government, which devotes a lot of effort to protecting the environment from global environmental change. Cairngorms is a great place for rock climbing and mountain biking.
